Vaibhav started Qura Browser as a first step toward a larger goal: building Indian digital products and reducing dependence on technology created outside India.
The idea of Qura began around Semester 3, initially as a name for a clothing brand. That idea was eventually dropped. Some time later, an interest in building his own browser gave the name a new direction. After researching the space, Vaibhav began work on Qura Browser on October 1, 2024.
The motivation was dependence on foreign technology. Vaibhav wanted to begin building Indian technology that could help reduce that dependence. Qura Browser became the starting point for this larger vision—not a claim that the goal had already been achieved.
Qura kept the name from the earlier clothing-brand idea. While building the browser, Vaibhav also gave it the full form “Quick Unique Resources Authorthy”. The intention was to start with a browser and grow toward the digital products people need in everyday life.
Qura Browser was the first Qura project. The original intention was to build a completely self-made browser engine. Approximately two months into the project, limited resources led to a shift to Chromium—a practical engineering decision about what could be built with the resources available.
Development has also included projects such as Qura Meet, Qura Jobs and Qura Slides. The long-term goal is a complete Indian digital ecosystem, giving people more ways to reduce their dependence on technology from outside India. This is a direction to build toward; it does not mean every product is available or integrated today.
The immediate priority is to successfully release the Qura Browser Beta. It has not yet been publicly released: an NTP issue remains to be resolved. Vaibhav reports that release mode is working safely on his own system; that local result is not a public beta launch or a general security guarantee.
Technology philosophy
Using established technologies is compatible with building original product experiences. A new interface is not the same as a new browser engine, search index or foundation model.
We make the current state visible: products, experiments and long-term ideas have different labels because they represent different commitments.
